About the EuroScholars Program

EuroScholars is looking for outstanding and motivated advanced undergraduate, honors or graduate students. The program is especially designed for students who are interested in discovering their potential for a research career. EuroScholars offers unique opportunities to spend a semester as a junior researcher at one of the top European research institutions. Supervision will be provided by academic staff, working on and/or responsible for the Research Project. The curriculum will consist of the Research Project (main element), literature review (independent study), elective (if applicable), and a language and culture course at the host university.

The objectives of this program are to challenge students to conduct original research at the cutting edge of human knowledge and promote interactions with scholars through an immersion in European Undergraduate Research Opportunities in the research environment. As a participant, you will learn about scientific reasoning, research methods, theoretical principles related to the research area, and scholarly communication. By finalizing the results of your Research Project in a paper of publishable quality, you will also have improved your writing and presentation skills.

The number of postgraduate students accounts to some 2300 and more than 6000 students are enrolled taking courses and programmes at the Bachelor and Master level in the field of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The university conducts more than 40% of all academic medical research in the country. External grants finance more than half of the research, which is more than any other Swedish university. Each year since 1901, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Photo: Soundback JonasMedicine. Awarding the prestigious Nobel Prize has given Karolinska Institutet an invaluable contact network and a unique survey of medical research results the world over. Over the years, five research scientists from KI have been awarded the Nobel Prize.

In 2010 Karolinska Institutet will celebrate its 200 years anniversary. Events of different kinds will fill the KI bicentennial year 2010.

As one of Europe´s leading medical universities, international collaboration is an essential part of KI's activities. Building networks is a cornerstone of the philosophy that drives a leading-edge university like Karolinska Institutet. The university has long been in the global spot-light. Among its trademarks are international exchange programmes for students and researchers. Karolinska Institutet participates in many international research programmes, including over 200 EU projects, more than 30 of which the university coordinates. The university has well-established research partnerships with countries on every continent.

Photo: www.ki.seThe spring of 2009 Karolinska Institutet hosted its first EuroScholar student, Olga Korenovska. Olga carried out a research project on cell death in the research group of Prof. Boris Zhivotovsky. The experience turned out to be a great success academically, according to both professor Zhivotovsky and Olga as well as on a personal level according to Olga’s final report:

“The EuroScholars program at KI has been an incredible experience! I am so grateful for everything! I will definitely miss Sweden, but I take back some great memories to the U.S. I hope more EuroScholars come to KI!”

Karolinska Institutet looks forward to host more Euroscholars students the coming years!

Stockholm – City on water

Photo: www.fotoakuten.seStockholm, one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, is built on 14 islands connected by 57 bridges. The beautiful buildings, the greenery, the fresh air and the proximity to the water are distinctive traits of this city. With its 750 year history and rich cultural life, Stockholm offers a wide selection of world-class museums and attractions. Experience big-city life, the history of civilization and natural scenery, all in the course of the same day.

Stockholm is the largest university town in the Nordic countries. About 80,000 students, 5,000 of whom are international, study at the somewhat more than twenty universities and university colleges in this area. Besides the fact that Stockholm has all cultural attractions of a capital there is a large production of student culture and events. The price is often suitable for a tight student budget and surprisingly often, there is no fee at all. At the universities and university colleges, students' associations and students' unions organise parties of different kinds. There is everything from the students' association pub with lectures to large events with a number of stages, dance floors and pubs on the same premises.
