Bringing Research to Life

A highly-developed university and research landscape plus innovative companies shape the scientific-research system in Germany. The high quality of academic training "Made in Germany" is recognised worldwide. More than 100 research universities train 70% of the students in Germany. With more than 250,000 scientists and investigators working here, Germany is the world's third-largest "country of researchers."

The strengths of German research traditionally lie in mechanical engineering, chemistry, medicine, physics and mathematics. Some disciplines of the humanities also play an outstanding role. German scientists and research institutes are world leaders in biomedicine and medical engineering, in environmental research and automotive engineering, and in engineering, in general. But German scientists and researchers also play their part in the world's top groups in the future fields of optical technologies, microsystems engineering, neurosciences, biotechnology and process engineering. In 2003, more than 13,000 German inventions were patented throughout Europe, meaning that almost one quarter of all European patents are based on developments made by German scientists. And Germany actually comes 1st in the field of nanotechnology.

So, research in Germany is particularly attractive for international academics and scientists: guests from many countries carry out research at Germany's universities and scientific institutes. Alone 20,000 foreign researchers are supported by German funding organisations, while a large number of scientists additionally finance their stays in Germany by other means.

Ruprecht-Karls-Universität - Heidelberg, Germany

Universität Heidelberg is Germany’s oldest university. Founded in 1386, Heidelberg has always been international in its scope. Today it is integrated into a worldwide network of cooperative research and teaching ventures. Exchange schemes and university partnerships, international graduate and doctoral programmes and participation in European networks testify to the highly outward-looking nature of Heidelberg University’s educational policies. Some 20 percent of the undergraduates at the University and about one-third of its doctoral students come from other countries.

Heidelberg University draws on the strengths of its individual departments to promote cross-divisional dialogue and take the cooperation between disciplines into an entirely new dimension. The research areas in which the University has made its mark most strikingly are transcultural studies, molecular life sciences, medicine, physics and astronomy, chemistry, mathematics and scientific computing.

Heidelberg University was successful in the Excellence Initiative devised by Germany’s federal and state governments with an Institutional Strategy entitled “Heidelberg: Realising the Potential of a Comprehensive University.” Accordingly, Germany’s leading university in international higher-education rankings now receives additional funding for the promotion of front-line research and the advancement of young scientists and scholars. This funding will also enable it to take a decisive step forward in its transition from a traditional universitas to a comprehensive university of the future.

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität - Munich, Germany

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München is one of Europe’s leading research universities with over 500 years of tradition. Know-how and creative intelligence of our academics form the foundation of LMU´s outstanding research balance as recognized by many national and international university rankings. Some 700 professors and 3,300 academic staff members conduct research and teach in the university’s 18 faculties, and some 44,000 students, 15 percent of whom come to LMU Munich from abroad, are currently taking advantage of the highly diversified opportunities.

As a genuine “universitas”, LMU Munich is constructed around the four pillars of classical academic research: humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine.

The historic part of the campus mainly accommodates the humanities and is located in Munich´s vibrant city center, close to the Bavarian State Library, numerous archives and some world-famous museums as well as the Englischer Garten and various street cafés, theatres and the Bavarian State Opera House.
The majority of natural and life sciences are concentrated at the High-Tech-Campus in Martinsried-Grosshadern, a one-of-a-kind research campus in Europe located 20 minutes south-west of Munich.
