In the Spotlight: LMU Munich

With a population of more than 1.5 million Munich is one of the biggest cities in Germany. Nevertheless, it is a very safe one and is often considered to be one of the world’s most liveable places.

Over half of the more than 80,000 students studying at Munich universities are enrolled at Ludwig- Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich), thanks to the wide range of courses offered in practically all academic fields.

LMU´s outstanding academic record, both nationally and internationally, has recently been attested to by the 2009 CHE (Centre for Higher Education Development) Ranking and the latest Shanghai Ranking, where it holds the highest position of all German universities, ranking number 55 of the top 100 universities worldwide.

LMU Munich places great importance on its international profile, maintaining an extensive network of collaborations with numerous universities and institutions around the world, mainly in Europe, North America and Asia. For example LMU is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU), the Venice International University (VIU) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In 2005 LMU opened a contact office in New York to spread public awareness in North America about LMU Munich. MORE>

Since 2009 LMU Munich also offers an English newsletter and a ScienceCast, to keep an international audience informed about its teaching and research.

New EuroScholars projects at LMU Munich:

Now LMU can also offer 2 new projects in the natural sciences. The first is entitled “Self assembly of organic semiconductor nanostructures”. In this project students will work in a laboratory at the renowned “Deutsches Museum”, where several scientists from the “Center for Nanoscience” conduct their research. VIEW THE PROJECT

The second is named “Molecular pharmacology of natural compounds”. The faculty of Pharmacy is located at the HighTechCampus of LMU Munich at Grosshadern/Martinsried, which stands for networked research of the highest quality in medical-scientific disciplines. VIEW THE PROJECT

Students interested in coming to Munich through the EuroScholars program can of course also choose from a wide spectrum of other subjects, such as Mathematics, English Studies or Communications. Students are invited to learn more about the various possibilities on the ES website

Fall Semester Evaluations - Short Analysis

by EuroScholars Director, Robert Coelen

Due to the fact that we had only 2 candidates in the program during the fall of 2009, the analysis of our student evaluation survey is presented in general terms only. The most important factor impacting the students choice of university was the research project. This finding once again underlines the importance of the match between student interest and the projects offered and provides further impetus to gain additional projects for the success of the program.

The application process, learning agreement process, guidance from the EuroLearn office, and provision of information were all generally found to be good. Housing presented no problems in all respects.

The MidStay program met their expectations and was considered worthwhile both in terms of adding value as well as meeting other participants in the Euroscholars program.

Communication at all levels was generally considered to be smooth, cooperative, informative and timely.

The Euroscholars experience, according to the candidates, contributed to their intercultural awareness, academic knowledge, personal development, and future career. The program met personal expectations and lived up to its promises.

All in all it can be said that Fall 2009 was again a good effort by all concerned and the candidates remain enthusiastic about the potential of the program and certainly would be willing to contribute to the promotion of the program.

Mid-Stay Program Report:

From December 7 – 8 Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich hosted the Mid-Stay Program for the autumn/winter EuroScholars of 2009, Jennifer Bean and Sam Teitelbaum.

On their first day they attended a lecture about “Higher Education in Europe” and were presented with their ES Awards by the deputy director of the International Affairs office at LMU. Afterwards they went on a Munich city tour, during which they climbed the tower of the “Alter Peter” church and visited some Christmas markets.

On the second day they learned about the faculty of Astrophysics, saw the university Observatory and visited the “Deutsches Museum”, where they were shown the “Gläsernes Labor” (“glass laboratory”, which means that research is done in public) in the recently established Center for New Technologies. On Wednesday morning they left again to Leiden and Geneva, respectively.

The 3rd Annual Midwest Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics

EuroScholars alumna, Jennifer Bean, recently presented on her EuroScholars research at Ohio State University

"I was a Euroscholar at Leiden University, the Netherlands. While a Euroscholar I conducted research for/with
Simon Portegies-Zwart and Anthony Brown. My research was a continuation of Simon's paper “The Lost Siblings of the Sun." The Sun was created in an embedded cluster with a number of other stars.

I used simulations to try and find possible candidates of these other stars in the Hipparcos catalogue. I did this by running simulations created by Dr. Anthony Brown and using the simulated data as selection criteria for the stars in Hipparcos catalog."
