In the Spotlight: Utrecht University Utrecht is a bustling city in the geographical center of the Netherlands. The city boasts a rich history that goes back to Roman times. Utrecht University was founded in 1636. With its 300,000 inhabitants, Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands and with no less than one sixth of the inhabitants being students, Utrecht is a real student city. Utrecht University is internationally recognized for its stimulating academic environment. It demonstrates an outstanding performance in various international rankings The University is highly ranked in the two most prestigious international University rankings (Shanghai ranking and Times Higher Education ranking). In both rankings Utrecht University ranks best in the Netherlands and worldwide as a top university (resp. nr 48 and 68).  Quality in education and research Utrecht University provides high-quality teaching. All programs meet stringent quality requirements. Students may expect challenging teaching by professional and inspiring teachers, who provide careful guidance and invite students to discuss scientific issues. To further stimulate its excellence in research, Utrecht University centers on 15 thematic clusters of research. These research focus areas consist of multidisciplinary clusters bringing together top-class research groups in each thematic field. Through these research themes Utrecht University wishes to foster solutions to social issues such as climate change, institutional changes, infectious diseases, the ageing population, and public health. Young Leader League In 2011 Utrecht University started the Young Leaders League, a selective honors course at graduate level for high-achievers with leadership potential. This course is about leadership and innovation skills, about responsibility and ethics, and it is structured around major challenges of modern societies in a globalizing world: - Sustainability and Growth

Quality in research collaboration Utrecht University has a very strong profile in Sustainability and Life Sciences. Utrecht University participates in a large number of public and public-private collaborations. It collaborates with research organizations and institutes, universities, institutions for higher education and businesses in many teaching and research fields. Collaboration takes place on a regional, national and international level. Utrecht Valorisation Centre In 2011 regional initiatives were clustered in the Utrecht Valorisation Centre. It offers support to staff of academic and HE institutions, (start up) enterprises and students for a transparent exchange of knowledge, know-how and skills with the purpose of creating commercial and societal value. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) In October 2011, Princess Máxima of the Netherlands and Rajendra Pachauri (Nobel Prize Winner and TERI’s CEO) opened the European headquarters of the renowned Indian research institute TERI at Utrecht Science Park. In addition to exchanging scientific knowledge in the field of sustainable development and energy TERI will concentrate on promoting partnerships and activities involving European and Asian businesses and institutions. TERI’s presence will further enhance the sustainability profile of Utrecht University. Danone Danone, a global leader in the food industry, will set up a new innovation centre for specialized food products at Utrecht Science Park. Danone’s decision was influenced in no small part by the successful existing cooperation with Utrecht University. The center is scheduled to open in 2012. Center for the Humanities The Centre for the Humanities is the platform where pioneering, innovative research is connected to greater socio-political relevance of the humanities. CfH makes this connection by focusing on the social status and the public perception of the humanities today.
