| The historic city of Lancaster is a small, vibrant university city, and rich in cultural heritage. Lancaster's history can be traced back thousands of years and has so much to offer, from castles and museums, where Lancaster's past comes to life, to pubs, clubs, theatres, markets and shops. Most of the city center is pedestrian-friendly and in addition to the usual high street retailers, there is a shopping arcade, and a large indoor market which contains a fish market selling fresh local catches from nearby Morecambe Bay. Stroll around the city on a Saturday morning, and you will be amazed at the numerous cafes and curiosity shops just waiting to be discovered. Threading through the city is the canal with its waterside inns where you can watch the procession of boats glide by. There are punts (small boats) for rent and a choice of craft offering cruises and restaurant facilities. Lancaster's Grand Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in England, and this beautiful auditorium hosts a varied program of concerts, comedy and theatre. The surrounding landscapes of winding rivers and valleys allow for fun day trips from Lancaster. Quaint villages freckle the countryside and inspirational views strech for miles. Climbing southwards above the Lune Valley is the ancient Forest of Bowland. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the first protected area in England to be awarded the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.
