| As the largest city in Scotland with the third largest population in the UK, Glasgow is a vibrant, trendy urban center with a down-to-earth and friendly character. A center of textile manufacturing, shipbuilding, and the coal and steel industry in the 19th century, it is now considered major cultural and financial center. Awarded the European City of Culture Award in 1990 and the City of Architecture and Design Award in 1999, Glasgow offers no end of breathtaking Victorian architecture and unique museums, such as the Burrell Collection and the Scottish Football Museum. A walk along the recently rejuvenated River Clyde, coursing through the center of the city, provides stunning views of Glasgow’s unique architecture such as the Clyde Auditorium (known affectionately as the “Armadillo”), and provides insight into Glasgow’s maritime heritage. Glasgow’s first-rate transportation system makes it easy to hop on a train or bus to visit its wide variety of pubs, clubs, and restaurants as well as its historic weekend flea market, the Barras on Gallowgate. Glasgow is perhaps best known for its thriving live-music scene. Named a UNESCO City of Music in 2008, this city hosts a colorful and enthusiastic music community with live local and popular music featured nightly in premier music venues.
