People and Population

80 percent of Scotland’s five million people live in the cities and towns of the Central Lowlands. The Scottish Highlands is one of Europe’s most sparsely populated areas with only nine people per square kilometer. While the Scottish ethnic population is fairly homogenous, the creativity, intuition, intelligence, and dynamic energy of the people creates a surprisingly diverse environment for such a small nation. From traditional festivals, games, and celebrations to outstanding artists, musicians, and scientists, the country has developed many rich layers of what it means to be Scottish.
