Lancaster University is a vibrant and friendly, self contained campus university which is committed to achieving the highest standards. With its residential College structure and high quality teaching departments, it places great emphasis on the student experience. Lancaster is among the top 150 universities in the world according to the Times World University rankings. 10th in the UK in the Independent’s Complete University Guide 2011, and 15th in the UK for student satisfaction.
The campus has a reputation for being one of the safest in the UK and has its own thriving community based around nine Residential Colleges which helps both home and international students settle into university life quickly. The campus has invested over £300 million over the last 6 years to improve student facilities, teaching space and accommodation.

LocationThe University is located in the northwest of England, close to the beautiful Lake District, one of England’s national parks. It has good rail links to London (2.5 hours), Edinburgh (2 hours), or Manchester (1 hour), as well as three airports within one and a half hours, which give easy access to mainland Europe. You are never far away from both spectacular countryside and city life.
The city of Lancaster is 15 minutes from campus by bus and its picturesque narrow streets, its canal and riverside, its parks, manageable size, and friendly atmosphere all make the city popular with students. The town has plenty to offer in the way of entertainment including an independent cinema and repertory theatre, pubs and restaurants, Students’ Union nightclub, museums and an annual literature festival.
Around the University
The campus is 3 miles outside Lancaster, surrounded by countryside with excellent transportation links to the town centre. Everything you need on a day to day basis can be found on campus, and, if not, the town centre shops and entertainment are only a 15 minute bus ride away. You can walk or jog along the lanes surrounding the University or cycle into town. Students often picnic or barbecue in the University grounds during the Summer.

Academic HighlightsThe University is well known for the quality of its work in Management and Environment Science and many pre-med students have studied at Lancaster. Recently the University was ranked 5th in the UK for Management and Sociology and 1st in Biomedicine, Contemporary Arts and Physics. A major new development, including a dedicated performance space,is LICA, the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts which comprises the departments of Music, Theatre and Art.
The recently established Centre for Medical Education and School of Health and Medicine is an exciting initiative which aims to tackle major issues in health and medicine in an interdisciplinary way and works closely with the National Health Service, health related industries and the voluntary sector.
English Literature, History, Politics and International Relations, European Studies, Psychology and Creative Writing are all popular options for study abroad students.
Undergraduate research projects are also an option instead of a classroom based course, especially for those attending in the Spring or for the full year. You are supervised on an individual basis by a specialist faculty member and this can be good preparation for a senior year dissertation.
The University of Lancaster Management School is AACSB and EQUIS accredited.

HousingThe 8 undergraduate Residential Colleges at Lancaster are at the center of student life. They are an important part in making Lancaster one of the friendliest universities around. Living in the college helps you to adjust to university life, provides social and study facilities, practical support and information as well as accommodation. You become part of a smaller close-knit community - your college community. You will be housed in a single study bedroom, the majority of which have private shower rooms. Each study bedroom has wired internet access and a telephone.
Accommodation is self catering and you will have access to a well equipped kitchen. If you don’t want to cook, there are many places to eat on campus including restaurants, coffee shops and takeaways as well as grocery stores for essential food items.

OrientationIn addition to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program, all students will participate in a university specific orientation.
All study abroad students attend Orientation and Course Registration on arrival and you can join in with all other activities organised by the Students’ Union and your College during Intro Week Week (if you start at Lancaster in October). In January, a day trip to the Lake District is an optional part of your orientation.

Scholarships AvailableLancaster University supports GlobaLinks Learning Abroad study abroad students with three $750 (USD) scholarships per year beginning 2011/2012. All students who have been accepted to study abroad for a semester or year at Lancaster University with GlobaLinks are eligible for this scholarship – the application will be available upon acceptance.

As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad participant, you will be directly enrolled as a student in the university abroad. This allows you to take advantage of every opportunity to be culturally integrated in the campus environment and culture by participating in university activities with resident students.
There are over 70 clubs and societies on campus, as well as a wide range of sports teams and facilities including indoor swimming pool, climbing wall, floodlit hard play area and life fitness and weights room.
Many social activities take place within your residential College including inter College sports events and there are regular concerts and performances, both by professional companies and students in the concert hall and studio theatre on campus. The Film Society shows several films each week and the Chaplaincy Centre is open to all faiths or none.
You can become involved in SCAN, the student newspaper; Bailrigg FM, the campus radio; or work on a project through LUVU, the University’s award winning Volunteer Unit. Volunteer projects include working in local schools helping older pupils set up their own business or as a reading or maths buddy, contributing to one day events such as Literacy Booster Days or with older and vulnerable people in the community.

Community Involvement
Getting involved abroad can enable you to meet local students, make a meaningful connection with your campus and community, and enhance your study abroad experience. Your coordinator will connect you with local resources if you wish to volunteer for community projects through your host university. It is important for you to find the right combination of academic, cultural, and leisure activities in order to take full advantage of international learning and cultural immersion.
All students are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities at or near their campus, where permitted under host-country immigration regulations. Service learning is an integral piece of a well-rounded education, and we support students’ efforts to integrate into the local culture through volunteer activities. Students are provided with information on volunteer opportunities on campus or within the community during the orientation and preparation process.

Special Programs/Excursions
Pre-Session Available
For an additional cost, students applying for the Fall semester at Lancaster University will also be able to enroll in an additional 4 week pre-session that takes place before the Fall semester starts. This pre-session program is designed to introduce students to British culture and to the British university experience. As part of this program, students take an intensive 4 credit class related to British culture and society. The cost of the pre-session includes an orientation, the class itself, various related field trips, and four weeks’ on-campus accommodation. The typical credit load for a Fall semester at Lancaster is 12 U.S. credits, but attendance at the pre-session allows students to earn up to 16 U.S. credits during their time at the university. There are usually two weeks between the end of the pre-session program and the start of the Fall semester when students can choose either to travel independently or to stay on campus for an additional fee. Travel and Social Events
The Travel Office on campus offers day and weekend trips to Dublin, York and London among other destinations and student societies also organise outings e.g. the Hiking Club.
Student Based Service and your Residential College organise social events as varied as a Christmas Ball, reception with the local Mayor, day trips, a pub quiz, pool tournament or inter College sports fixtures.

Enhance Your Experience OnlineGlobal Citizen Development
The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory; however, we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Fee IncludesAll fees are quoted in US Dollars unless otherwise specifically stated. Program Fees include tuition for full-time semester status, university and program administrative fees, membership in the student union (where applicable), health insurance, ISIC card, and the Bridging Cultures Program. Tuition fees are based on the arts and social science tuition charged by this university. There may be higher tuition associated with certain disciplines. Where applicable, this difference in tuition will be added to the total Program Fees. Fees include all pre-departure services such as: orientation materials, visa-processing support (excluding the visa fee), housing placements, personal advising, subject selections, liaise with your home university, credit transfer assistance, and financial aid services. As a study abroad student, you will be required to enroll as a full time student. Your semester is equivalent to 12-16 U.S. credits. Additional tuition and/or fees may apply in some subject areas not limited to the following: science, engineering, fine arts, and journalism. Students who undertake subjects where the university requires additional fees will be billed by the host university. Housing Fees are not included in the Program Fee and will be billed separately depending on the specific accommodations placement. A housing deposit is not included in this fee. Where required to reserve accommodations in advance the student will make direct payment for the refundable housing deposit. Students who select “personal apartment living arranged upon arrival by the student” will only be charged the Program Fees, and housing costs will be paid on arrival by the student. Entry RequirementsApplicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level (sophomore or higher).
