University of Stirling International Summer School - Summer or January Short Course

Overview

Study abroad in Scotland over the summer with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as EuroLearn.

University of Stirling’s International Summer School (ISS) is specifically designed for international students from around the world and emphasizes experiential learning so that students can make the most of their studies in Scotland.

The University of Stirling is a wonderful place to study – beautiful and vibrant, relaxed and engaging. It has one of the finest campuses in Europe and has an excellent reputation for both research and teaching. The ISS program is not simply a means of gaining academic credit. The program has been designed to incorporate a diverse range of social and cultural activities – from kayaking on the campus loch to nights out at the pub – thus enabling you to get to know other students on the ISS, as well as giving you the opportunity to travel and experience the real Scotland.

Experiential Learning/Field Trips

A key feature of the International Summer School at the University of Stirling will be out of class study. In addition to seminar-style classroom study, each class will include an experiential element such as a visit to the Scottish Parliament or a historic Scottish battlefield. Other out of class experiences have included a day visiting sites of interest to Scottish environmental history, attending the Edinburgh International Film Festival with your class instructor, and readings at the MacRobert Arts Centre.

These field trips are also open to those students not signed up for that specific module and are included in the program fee.

In addition, a number of guided excursions to major Scottish attractions (including the nearby cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the historic medieval town of St Andrews etc.) are also included in the program cost - so there really is no excuse not to get out there and experience Scotland!

Additional weekend and day trip opportunities to Loch Ness, the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye may also be offered at a modest additional fee.

Orientation/Social Activities

Upon arrival you will be picked up from either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports and brought to your on-campus housing. A full orientation program will be offered to new students at the start of each block which includes a campus tour, bus tour of Stirling and the surrounding area, and IT/library induction. In addition to the welcome and farewell events – some in the past have been in Airthrey Castle on campus – a number of other social activities are planned which ISS and other Stirling students will be invited to attend. There will even be a Scottish Ceilidh to allow you to learn and practice your Scottish Country Dancing and enjoy traditional Scottish fiddle music.

Housing

You will be housed with other ISS students in shared on-campus apartments. Rooms are all singles within a three to six person flat with shared kitchen, social and bathroom facilities. Bedding and cooking utensils are provided in all apartments. Internet access is available in your room or via on campus 24 hour computing labs. The apartments are about a ten minute walk from the center of campus, a walk that will take you through the most scenic parts of campus (past a castle, a golf course, and around a lake that is full of ducks and other wildlife in the summer).

Internships

This exciting new opportunity, run in partnership with the Career Development Centre at the University of Stirling, will give students opportunities to carry out four-week internships in a number of sectors in the Stirling area. These sectors may include sports, environmental science, politics, charity/nonprofit and marketing, though this list is subject to change. Through this internship, students will develop an understanding of the UK labour market and the specific sector of their internship; develop their team working skills; and develop their written and oral communication skills. Students can expect to spend approximately 140 hours in their internship placement and an additional 10 hours on associated classroom sessions, review days, writing reflective journals, and on-line tutorials run by the Career Development Centre. Assessment will take the form of a presentation given about your internship, completion of your journals, and submission of a project report. The Internship is worth approximately 3 U.S. semester credits.

Students wishing to participate in the Internship program will enrol full time in Block 1 and take 2 classes. The internship compontent will run during the 4 weeks of Block 2. Internship students may also be required to obtain an appropriate UK visa, such as a Tier 4 visa. GlobaLinks Learning Abroad will help you through the visa application process upon acceptance.

Please note that this program has an early application deadline of February 15.
