When we imagine England, we think back to the stories we were told as children and conjure up the quintessential images of quaint towns and villages; castles; stately homes; rolling green hills; great writers, poets, politicians and thinkers; the royal family; and a history that dates back thousands of years. The University of Kent, located in Canterbury, is based in one of the UK’s most historic cities and encapsulates all of these things and more, offering an unrivalled student experience.

University of Kent provides students with an environment that is both intellectually and personally stimulating. Set in over 300 acres of parkland just over a mile away from the centre of Canterbury, it is able to offer a beautiful campus with views overlooking the stunning Canterbury Cathedral.

The Canterbury campus also boasts the Gulbenkian Cinema and Theatre (a movie theater and outstanding regional theater which is used for both student and professional productions), sports facilities, banks, shops, bars, restaurants, cafes, a medical center, counseling support, and one of the most active student unions in the country. The University of Kent is voted one of the top universities in the UK in National Student Satisfaction Surveys.

Location

The City of Canterbury is one of the UK’s most beautiful and historic cities. Still surrounded by its original Roman walls, Canterbury is home to traditional cobbled streets and many medieval buildings of great historical significance, not least of which is Canterbury Cathedral, a World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO. Canterbury also enjoys a wonderful location in southeast England, between two of the world’s great cities of London and Paris.

London, with Heathrow and Gatwick airports, is just 56 miles away, and Paris is only two hours away by train.

Around the University

University of Kent’s main campus is in Canterbury, a city rich in history and literary heritage, and voted the UK’s safest University city by The Independent. The city’s population doubles during semester time, from 50,000 to 100,000, making this a truly student orientated city. While the 300 acre campus has all you need in one place – food, nightlife, arts, sports, support, banking and so on, students can walk or take a 5 minute bus ride to the city itself, where they’ll find a great choice of shopping, restaurants, parks, heritage sites, museums, and social and cultural opportunities. The city, and the campus, is home to festivals and seasonal events all year round.

The nearest coastal town, Whitstable, is only ten miles away and accessible from the campus by bus. The town is famous for great seafood, and is popular with students as great break from studies. The coast stretches round the county of Kent, offering a choice of beaches and activities, great for the warmer months.

Kent is known as the Garden of England, so it’s no surprise to find verdant countryside surrounding the city of Canterbury. This beautiful landscape is home zoos, safaris, woods, walking and cycling trails, castles, and many small towns and locations to explore.

University of Kent lies between the dynamic and cosmopolitan cities of London and Paris. London is one hour way by train, and Paris two hours. Students make the most of these two cities on their weekends, while enjoying the communal, safe and friendly city of Canterbury as their home.

Orientation

In addition to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Bridging Cultures Program, all students will participate in a university specific orientation.

Prior to the first and second semester, the International Office at Kent organizes an Orientation Program for new international students. This two-day program consists of a general introduction to the university, the faculties, the city of Canterbury, and the student organizations. During orientation the International Office often takes students on a tour of the Canterbury Cathedral and to a nearby supermarket, ASDA. During these days, students will meet many other international students from all over the world.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad participant, you will be directly enrolled as a student in the university abroad. This allows you to take advantage of every opportunity to be culturally integrated in the campus environment and culture by participating in university activities with resident students. One of the best ways to integrate into British culture is by living with local people in their own homes. Students who enroll in University of Kent’s HOST program are able to take advantage of weekend-long family homestays where they choose to visit a British family in different cities of the UK. Students choose the city they would like to visit and are then matched up with a host family. All families are vetted and students can also choose to go in pairs if they would prefer not to go alone. This scheme is incredibly successful and allows students to see cities around the UK and experience them in a depth and manner impossible for tourists. This is also very low-cost to students who only normally pay their transportation costs from Kent to the destination city.

The Sports Federation on campus allows students at the University of Kent to join various Student Sports Clubs. Funded by the Students’ Union, the Sports Federation runs over 35 different clubs at a range of levels, so experience is not necessary.

Community Involvement

Getting involved abroad can enable you to meet local students, make a meaningful connection with your campus and community, and enhance your study abroad experience. Your coordinator will connect you with local resources if you wish to volunteer for community projects through your host university. It is important for you to find the right combination of academic, cultural, and leisure activities in order to take full advantage of international learning and cultural immersion.

All students are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities at or near their campus, where permitted under host-country immigration regulations. Service learning is an integral piece of a well-rounded education, and we support students’ efforts to integrate into the local culture through volunteer activities. Students are provided with information on volunteer opportunities on campus or within the community during the orientation and preparation process.

Example of how you can get involved in the community:

Kent Union "Volunteering"
Run through the student union, this program a central placement service for any and all kinds of volunteer projects with the local community, or coordination of student-led projects. http://www.kentunion.co.uk/volunteering/

Special Programs/Excursions

Besides sporting events through the Sports Center, there are also numerous clubs and societies to become involved in through the Student Union.

If you still haven’t found anything that suits you check out the program called Do Something Different, which looks for one-off events and activities for students to participate in. This program is for all Kent students and gives you a chance to try out new activities with the freedom to come and go as you please. The program is a great way to meet new people, learn about the local community, and is very flexible to help fit anyone’s schedule.
