Overview
The University of Manchester is one of Europe’s top universities, and is internationally recognized for both its teaching quality and research excellence. It is the largest single-campus university in the UK, with approximately 35,500 students. It is also the most popular university in the UK in terms of number of applications from UK students.
Many of the major advances of the 20th century began at the University, including the development of the world’s first programmable computer, and the splitting of the atom. The University campus spans a large area right next to the city centre and is dominated by grand buildings, but also has quiet corners, landscaped gardens, cafes and common rooms. Everything is within easy walking distance.
In the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise (the UK government’s formal method of assessing the quality of research in universities), The University of Manchester emerged amongst the country’s top four or five major research universities, alongside institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge and University College London.
Location
Manchester itself is a vibrant, youthful city with a thriving cultural scene and an abundance of theatres, restaurants, museums, music venues and sporting opportunities. It is located in the North West of England, approximately 180 miles north of London. Because of its prime location on the national and international network of airline routes, rail links and motorways, Manchester operates as a gateway to all areas of the country and to the rest of Europe and the world. There are daily direct scheduled flights to many major US cities, including Chicago, New York, Newark, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Orlando, as well as regular short-haul flights to many European cities such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels.
More than 80,000 university students live in Manchester in total, meaning the city buzzes with young people. The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester is a city of contrasts, with sparkling new buildings seated right beside regenerated original cotton mills and historic Victorian buildings and monuments. Manchester is also a great base from which to explore the rest of the UK. The beautiful Lake District, Peak District and Snowdonia National Parks are all within easy reach, and the North West coast is less than an hour away.

Study Abroad plus Leadership and Service
The University has an innovative ‘Study Abroad plus Leadership and Service’ program, which enables students to combine Service Learning and Leadership training with their standard study abroad program. Registration for this module is done in advance and a supplemental application is required. Further detail will be provided to those students interested in this unique opportunity.
The program allows students to engage with local community groups, facilitating engagement with British life and society in a more direct way than is possible through academic study alone. The taught leadership element of the program helps students understand the importance of sustainable leadership that promotes environmental care, social justice and prosperity.
Pre-Law Program
The university also has a Pre-Law program for students from US universities who are interested in progressing on to Law School after their undergraduate degree. The program gives students the chance to study law course units, such as Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, Human Rights, Counter-Terrorism, and Law and Ethics, which are studied at undergraduate level in the UK.
