The University of Manchester is one of Europe’s top universities, and is internationally recognized for both its teaching quality and research excellence. It is the largest single-campus university in the UK, with approximately 39,000 students. It is also the most popular university in the UK in terms of number of applications from UK students.

Many of the major advances of the 20th century began at the University, including the development of the world’s first programmable computer, and the splitting of the atom. The University campus spans a large area right next to the city centre and is dominated by grand buildings, but also has quiet corners, landscaped gardens, cafes and common rooms. Everything is within easy walking distance.

In the latest UK Research Assessment Exercise (the UK government’s formal method of assessing the quality of research in universities), The University of Manchester emerged amongst the country’s top four or five major research universities, alongside institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge and University College London.

Location

Manchester itself is a vibrant, youthful city with a thriving cultural scene and an abundance of theatres, restaurants, museums, music venues and sporting opportunities. It is located in the North West of England, approximately 180 miles north of London. Because of its prime location on the national and international network of airline routes, rail links and motorways, Manchester operates as a gateway to all areas of the country and to the rest of Europe and the world. There are daily direct scheduled flights to many major US cities, including Chicago, New York, Newark, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Orlando, as well as regular short-haul flights to many European cities such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Amsterdam and Brussels.

More than 80,000 university students live in Manchester in total, meaning the city buzzes with young people. The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester is a city of contrasts, with sparkling new buildings seated right beside regenerated original cotton mills and historic Victorian buildings and monuments. Manchester is also a great base from which to explore the rest of the UK. The beautiful Lake District, Peak District and Snowdonia National Parks are all within easy reach, and the North West coast is less than an hour away.

Academic Highlights

The University of Manchester is ranked as number 29 in the world according to the 2008 THES rankings, and number 9 in Europe. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise, Manchester was ranked as third in the UK (behind Cambridge and Oxford) in terms of ‘Research Power’. 65% of research activity at Manchester was judged to be ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, and Manchester came top in the country for quality in 6 subject areas, behind only Cambridge (18 subject areas) and Oxford (8 subject areas). The University of Manchester attracts world-renowned researchers and instructors and boasts no few than 25 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students.

The Manchester Business School is AACSB and EQUIS accredited.

Around the University

Within easy reach of the campus itself are bookshops; the Aquatics Centre (the venue for the 2002 Commonwealth Games swimming events) and Sugden Sports Centre; pubs, cafes and bars; health food shops; banks; the Manchester Museum and Whitworth Art Gallery; convenience stores; pharmacies; the Manchester Royal Infirmary Hospital; the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) Northern Headquarters, and beautiful public parkland.

Oxford Road, on which the South Campus is situated, is the busiest bus route in Western Europe, making transportation across the city very quick and easy. Also within walking distance of the University Campus is the famous "Curry Mile" - a dazzling stretch of inexpensive Asian restaurants, shops and internet cafes popular with both students and locals.

Housing

Students can choose from either catered (with a meal plan) or self catered accommodation, as well as from en-suite rooms (with a private restroom) or shared facilities. All students will have single-study bedrooms with shared living/communal areas. A wide variety of styles of accommodation are available, ranging from modern apartments to traditional collegiate-style halls of residence. Residences are self-contained communities with their own common rooms, bars and social activities.  Housing options for Spring semester students is more limited with catered halls (with meal plans) more prevalent during this term.

Get Involved Abroad

Extracurricular Activities

As a GlobaLinks Learning Abroad participant, you will be directly enrolled as a student in the university abroad. This allows you to take advantage of every opportunity to be culturally integrated in the campus environment and culture by participating in university activities with resident students. Students at The University of Manchester can take part in a huge range of activities during their period of study abroad. Lots of societies, run by and for students, exist at the University, enabling participants to meet like-minded friends – whether students are interested in Basketball, Dance, Film, Hiking, Swimming, Ice Skating, Jazz, Photography, Tai Chi, Rowing or Tennis, there are clubs to suit!

Community Involvement

Getting involved abroad can enable you to meet local students, make a meaningful connection with your campus and community, and enhance your study abroad experience. Your coordinator will connect you with local resources if you wish to volunteer for community projects through your host university. It is important for you to find the right combination of academic, cultural, and leisure activities in order to take full advantage of international learning and cultural immersion.

All students are encouraged to participate in volunteer activities at or near their campus, where permitted under host-country immigration regulations. Service learning is an integral piece of a well-rounded education, and we support students’ efforts to integrate into the local culture through volunteer activities. Students are provided with information on volunteer opportunities on campus or within the community during the orientation and preparation process.

Examples of how you can get involved in the community:

Special Programs

Study Abroad plus Leadership and Service

The University has an innovative ‘Study Abroad plus Leadership and Service’ program, which enables students to combine Service Learning and Leadership training with their standard study abroad program.

The program allows students to engage with local community groups, facilitating engagement with British life and society in a more direct way than is possible through academic study alone. The taught leadership element of the program helps students understand the importance of sustainable leadership that promotes environmental care, social justice and prosperity.

There are three primary components of this prestigious program:

Study Abroad Enrollment at Manchester:

Participants will take up to 50 Manchester credits of academic study towards your home university degree.

Leadership in Action Course

The 'Leadership in Action' course delivered by prominent University faculty and high profile external speakers, which covers topics such as:

  • Leadership for the 21st century
  • Social Entrepreneurship
  • Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Business Ethics
  • Poverty, Globalization and Environmental Degradation
  • Sustainable Urban Development

Students studying for one semester will take this 10 credit unit (approximately 3 US credits). Students studying at Manchester for a full academic year can opt to take a 20 credit unit which involves undertaking an independent research project during the 2nd semester.

Your home university will be able to confirm whether credit transfer is possible for the academic element of this course, and in which area. This course would usually transfer as a Business or Sociology credit, but may be possible for many other disciplines.

Service Learning activity

Students undertaking this program are required to complete 60 hours of service learning (at least 15 of these must be completed in Manchester). Students can undertake a wide variety of volunteering activities, including work with children, with homeless people, on environmental projects, or charity fundraising. Manchester staff will provide support to students to help them source appropriate opportunities.

There may also be opportunities to tailor your voluntary activity to your degree - for example, Art students may wish to volunteer in a gallery or The Manchester Museum.

Students who complete 60 hours of service learning plus “Leadership in Action” will receive the prestigious Manchester Leadership Award.

HOW TO APPLY - This program requires an additional application. It is a competitive program and acceptance to this program is not guaranteed.
