OverviewStudy abroad in Italy over the summer with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad, formerly known as EuroLearn.
UCSC Milan offers three different programs for international students seeking study abroad opportunities in Italy during the months of June and July. Each track offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Italian life and culture in the thriving city of Milan, Italy.
The Italian Language and Culture track includes 60 hours of Italian language instruction at the beginner's or intermediate level and 40 hours of culture based instruction (in English). The Business track is taught (in English) by both academic and professional experts and offers interaction and up-close exposure to the best practices of the Italian entrepreneurial system. Particular attention will be paid to fashion & design, tourism, agribusiness, art, small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), industrial clusters and entrepreneurship. Students also have the option to combine the language and business courses in the 6 week program, Italian Language & Business.

Academic Highlights
Students have 3 different academic options during the UCSC Milan International Summer Program.
Italian Language and Culture
During this 4-week, 6 US credit program students will have 60 hours of language instruction (40 hours intensive the first two weeks + 20 hours the last two weeks). The aim of this course is to present the basics of spoken and written Italian. During the course the students will learn how to communicate in simple everyday situations. The course is focused on communication: a pragmatic approach will be used, grammar and other theoretical aspects of the language will be discovered step by step together with the instructor. Students will also practice a lot of phonetics in order to learn how to read, write and spell properly the Italian language sounds. Beforing arriving in Milan, students will take an online language profiency test in order to place them into the beginner's or intermediate level.
Along with the Italian language studies, students will explore topics related to Italian culture (40 additional hours of instruction in English), such as:
- The City of Milan - Money is Power: How the financial capital, which is located in the richest region of the country, is emblematic of a cultural divide between North and South.
- The Italian Industries: Their impact on the social fabric of the country, the case of fashion and design, media, and the issue of gender.
- Italy in Film: National and international representations of Italy and Italian culture in film
The course will include site visits within the City of Milan. Students will also have the opportunity to take trips to various places in the region of Lombardy.
Business, Experiencing Italian Excellence
This track is a 4-week summer program worth 6 US credits for business students interested in acquiring direct knowledge and experience of Italian business expertise. The program, taught by both academic and professional experts in English, offers interaction and up-close exposure to the best practices of the Italian entrepreneurial system. Particular attention will be paid to fashion & design, tourism, agribusiness, art, small and medium size enterprises (SMEs), industrial clusters and entrepreneurship.
These Italian excellences will be presented through:
- Classroom lectures
- Professional testimonials
- Field visits to businesses, industrial clusters, as well as research and design centers
- Seminars with experts and professionals involved in international commerce
This program is divided between 1 core unit and 4 topical modules:
Core Unit: The European Union and Italian Business
- Transition to market economies in Central and Eastern Europe
- European market integration
- Migration and multiculturalism in Europe
- SMEs and Industrial Clusters
- Competitive strategies of SMEs (the Italian perspective)
- Industrial districts of SMEs (the Italian experience)
- Organization and human resource management in SMEs
- Organizational structures in SMEs (a comparison with large enterprises, characteristics of the organizational culture of SME, human resource management in SMEs)
- Critical aspects of recruiting and developing talent, career planning and competence mapping in SMEs

Field trips will be offered in conjunction with specific topic areas of the course. For example, visits to Como will correspond with the fashion and design portion of the class, while a trip to Cinque Terre or Florence will be possible while studying tourism aspects. There are two or three potential Fridays during the course when these field studies will be scheduled. For an additional charge, students also will have the option of spending the entire weekend visiting these places of interest.
Italian Language & Business
This 6-week, 8 US credit program combines the language and business tracks individually offered in order for students to make the most of their time in Italy. Students will start the program with 40 hours of language instruction for the first two weeks. Before arriving in Milan, students will take an online language profiency test in order to place them into the beginner's or intermediate level. After the language instruction portion of the program, students will pick up the Business track, as described above.

LocationUCSC offers international students the opportunity to take exciting classes while experiencing one of Italy’s most popular cities, known for its fast-growing industries, including fashion, media, and finance, as well as its fascinating historical sites coupled with all the amenities of modern city life.
Located in the city center of Milan, the UCSC campus is within walking distance of many of Milan’s historical, cultural, and religious sites: the Duomo, Santa Maria delle Grazie (Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper), Castello Sforzesco, and many more.
Additionally, public transportation (bus, tram, metro, train) is easily accessible in the surrounding areas for travel to more remote locations within the city.

HousingUCSC works with Milano International Living, a housing service located on campus, that places students in shared apartments across the city. The apartments provided through MIL Service include wireless Internet connections, utilities (water and electricity), cleaning service, basic cable television, and are fully furnished including extra amenities such as a DVD player, television set, and kitchenware.

Orientation/ExcursionsGlobaLinks Learning Abroad will host an online pre-departure orientation for all students to prepare them for their program and to meet other GlobaLinks students. UCSC also hosts an on-site orientation to help students become acquainted with the university, the city, and other international students.
Regardless of which academic track students select, they will have the opportunity to explore Milan and the surrounding areas during their time abroad. Examples of program excursions include visits to the Lombardy region, Lake Como, Cinque Terre, and Florence. These excursions may or may not be included in the program fee. Students will also have weekends free in order to spend more time in Milan and/or take advantage of Milan's close proximity and ease of travel to other parts of Europe. Students may travel independently or take a travel tour with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad's travel partner, STA Travel.

The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory; however, we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Fee IncludesAll fees are quoted in US Dollars unless otherwise specifically stated. Program Fees include tuition for full-time summer status, housing for the official program dates, university and program administrative fees, some cultural excursions, and health insurance. Fees include all pre-departure services such as: orientation materials, visa-processing support (excluding the visa fee), housing placements, personal advising, subject selections, liaise with your home university, credit transfer assistance, and financial aid services. As a study abroad student, you will be required to enroll as a full time student which is equivalent to 6-8 U.S. credits. The housing deposit is not included in this fee and will be paid directly by the student when housing placements are confirmed.

Entry RequirementsApplicants must have the required GPA and have completed at least the equivalent of one year of full-time study at the university/college level and be enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of application.
Students with a lower GPA than the requirement may be considered on a case by case basis. Please contact our office for more information.
No prior Italian language instruction is required. Students taking the Italian Language and Culture or the Italian Language and Business program will be asked to take an on-line Italian language proficiency test prior to arrival. Applicants will be given instructions upon admission on how to proceed with the on-line testing.
Non-native speakers of English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 80 iBT or an IELTS score of 6.

Jill, an Outreach and Student Services Coordinator for EuroLearn, is responsible for enrollment and returned student services for programs at the University of Economics, Czech Republic; Freie Universität (FUBiS summer program and FUBEST semester program), Germany; American College of Thessaloniki, Greece; and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC), Italy. Jill graduated from the University of Denver with her Master’s Degree in International and Intercultural Communications and received her BA from Northwest Missouri State University. An AustraLearn alum, she studied at the University of Canberra and has since lived, worked, and traveled through Europe and Central America. Jill enjoys sharing her passion for international education, and, as a native Nebraskan, will always be a Husker fan. |
