Overview

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad offers a summer abroad program at Pablo de Olavide in conjunction with Active Learning Abroad for in-country support and services.

Established in 1997, the Pablo de Olavide University of Seville (UPO) is one of the youngest public universities in Spain; however, it has successfully fulfilled the first stage of development and now with both effort and vision looks towards a second phase of consolidation and expansion.

Pablo de Olavide University is endowed with and known for providing the most modern equipment available to research and reporting teams: extensive use of information technology and electronics, teaching in other languages, modern services required for the university community, extensive variety of sport facilities, contacts in business and professional field and more.

The Centro Universitario Internacional (the International Center) was founded officially in 2002, even though UPO started its Hispanic Studies Program during the fall of 2001. The International Center currently offers a variety of programs for international students from all over the world. Courses are taught in English and in Spanish in areas such as business, political science, history, art, etc. and Spanish language classes are offered at six different levels.

The Pablo de Olavide University is recognized and accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a granting degree high learning institution.

Location

Sevilla is the capital of the region of Andalusia and the fourth largest city in Spain with a total population of 750,000. Rich in history, traditions, and popular culture, Sevilla is very well known for the beauty of its architecture, where Christian and Muslim buildings spread across the city center; its parks and gardens, its holy week; and its flamenco tradition. Sevilla’s famous bullfighting ring, La Maestranza, is for many people the most beautiful in the world. Sevilla’s friendly atmosphere makes it the perfect place to discover the essence of the most common Spanish stereotype, flamenco and bullfights. However, the city is also a modern urban spot where tradition and modern exist side by side.

Home to an international airport and connected with Madrid and Barcelona by the high speed train, Sevilla is an ideal place from which to travel to other Spanish cities and the rest of Europe. It is also very close to the most Southern part of Spain, and has easy access to both Portugal and North Africa.

Academic Highlights

Flamenco and Spanish Culture Program Overview

• Minimum GPA: 2.75
• Language of instruction: English and Spanish
• Language requirements: None, open to all levels (1 semester of Spanish recommended)
• Place of instruction: Pablo de Olavide University
• Participants: International students
• Upon arrival students take a placement exam to determine language proficiency

Students choose 1 or 2 courses consisting of 45 hours of lectures each, equivalent to 3 US credits. Please view the course catalog to see a complete list of courses available.

Housing

Students may choose from the following housing options: homestay, residence halls, or shared apartments. We always try to provide students with their first housing choice, but we cannot guarantee it. It is why we recommend students apply in advance so they have a better chance to obtain their preferred option.

Homestay

Staying with a host family is a way to enrich student’s experience and to reinforce the knowledge gained during the program. We select our families carefully and have known them for years. All of them have extensive experience accommodating foreign students. Upon arrival students receive a key of the house so they may come and go as they please. Students will be able to receive telephone calls, but most likely will not be able to have guests over. Full board (three daily meals) and one laundry load per week is provided.

Residence

This is an off-campus student’s residence. Spaniards and international students are residents of this option mostly in double rooms, depending on availability some singles may be offered as well. Kitchen and bathroom may be private or shared. There are also common areas. Usually, the residence offers laundry facilities and meals may or may not be included. 

Shared Apartment

These apartments are shared by international students. They have single and double bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with cooking utensils, washing machine, refrigerator, and shared bathrooms. Students must respect building community rules and maintain the apartment in decent conditions. The price of accommodation includes the cost of utilities (electricity, gas, water) within reasonable expending and, in most cases, a weekly cleaning of the communal areas. Meals are not included.

University Services

UPO provides an orientation to students including relevant information on academics, teaching methodologies and other specifics. Students receive a university ID allowing them to access to different university services, such as computer labs, libraries, sport facilities and other. UPO also provides some cultural activities in Sevilla visiting important historical landmarks and other interesting local places. The University has cafeteria and restaurant services.

Overseas Staff and Support

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and Active Learning Abroad have forged a unique partnership to provide high quality study abroad opportunities in Spain. Active Learning Abroad (ALA) is GlobaLinks’ partner and overseas office for all students studying for a summer or semester at a university in Spain. The ALA offices and staff in Barcelona, Sevilla, Salamanca, and Madrid work closely with GlobaLinks Learning Abroad staff in the U.S. to provide all students with services and support throughout the experience. This ensures that each student is ensured an individualized experience both during the pre-departure stage and while in country. The ALA team in Spain delivers the Bridging Cultures Program onsite and Discovery Activities throughout the semester or summer and are also available 24/7 for emergency support.

Excursions

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad and Active Learning Abroad will provide excursions to all students participating in a summer abroad program in Sevilla. This will allow students to get familiar with some of the most interesting cities and areas in Spain from cultural, artistic, and historic perspectives. Summer students generally have one overnight trip and one day excursion during their program. Below are some examples of previous excursions. Please note not all excursions will be offered each term and locations are subject to change.

Córdoba

Once the capital of Muslim Spain, Cordoba stills reflects the importance of some of its magnificent buildings, such as La Mezquita, (The Mosque) and the narrow streets of its Jewish quarter. Located by the Guadalquivir River Córdoba is the perfect place to admire Christian, Muslim and Jewish reminiscences.

Granada

The home of the Alhambra was the last Muslim city in Spain to be retaken from the Arabs by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. At the foothills of Sierra Nevada and 30 minutes away from the tropical coast of the province, Granada offers endless opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in the old Muslim and Jewish quarters of the city and visit the traditional gypsy caves of El Sacromonte where the purest flamenco is performed.

Jerez de la Frontera

Located in the Southwest of Spain, midway between the sea and the mountain in the province of Cádiz, Jerez is very appealing to visitors and tourists in general because it is the capital of sherry wine, of Andalusian horse, and, for many, of flamenco. Students will see its vineyards and pay a visit to a sherry bodega (cellar), to taste this famous wine and see how it is made. Jerez is also home of the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, an internationally recognized riding school. Last, but not least, this is also the place where, to many, Flamenco singing began.

Cádiz

It is the “oldest” city in the Iberian Peninsula and probably in all South Western Europe. It is also known as Little Havana because it resembles the Cuban capital. The historical center has different old quarters that contrast with the new areas of the city. The historical quarter has narrow streets ending in typical plazas and the new areas consist in modern European type buildings and avenues. While you’re there, don’t forget to spend an evening viewing the sun set on one of Cadiz’s famous beaches.

Gibraltar (U.K.)

Gibraltar is a British overseas territory taken from Spain in 1704 and officially ceded in 1713. Commonly known as “the rock” it is a very shocking place since many of its inhabitants speak British English with an Andalusian accent. It is located in southern Spain overlooking the strait of Gibraltar and 10 miles from Northern Africa (Morocco). It is also an important military base that traditionally has caused some diplomatic problems between British and Spanish governments.

Málaga and Ronda

Discover the city where Picasso was born; visit its old quarter, its cathedral, its castle; and swim in one of the most popular summer resorts in Europe. Málaga offers many Mediterranean beaches to relax and make good friends. Ronda is a small town in the Sierra with spectacular views which also offers the true essence of a typical pueblo andaluz. Ronda’s landscape, in the middle of the sierra, is just unforgettable.

Lagos (The Algarve, Portugal)

Lagos (lakes in English) is located some 20 miles East of Sagres point, the most southwestern point in continental Europe. Sagres had the most advanced sailing schools at the end of the Middle Ages and became an important starting point to explore Africa, Asia, and America. Lagos is an ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history and tradition. Today it is a famous beach resort for many Europeans.

Ground transportation, entrance fees, and guided tours are included in program fees for all excursions. Hotel accommodation and breakfast are also included in all overnight excursions.

Enhance Your Experience Online

Global Citizen Development

The new Global Citizen Development modules are online learning components designed to help you explore your study abroad destination and experience at a whole new level. These modules are not mandatory; however, we strongly encourage your participation as they will introduce you to the opportunities and challenges you may encounter when participating in a study abroad program, as well as expose you to cultural insights and knowledge about your host country to help make your program abroad even more successful and fulfilling. Through the 3 modules, you will refine your skills in cross-cultural observation, adaptation, and communication.

Fee Includes

All fees are quoted in US Dollars unless otherwise specifically stated. Program Fees include tuition for two courses, university and program administrative fees, excursions, health insurance, ISIC card, and orientation. Fees include all pre-departure services such as: orientation materials, housing placements, personal advising, subject selections, liaise with your home university, credit transfer assistance, and financial aid services. A refundable housing deposit is not included in this fee.

Programs in Europe Coordinator

Name: Carrie Davis Title: Manager - Programs in Europe Department: BIO: Carrie manages the study abroad admissions and enrollment services for all EuroLearn programs and is also the coordinator for Leiden University, Lille Catholic University and all programs in Spain. Carrie has been involved with international education for most of her life. In high school, she studied abroad for a year in the Netherlands and spent consecutive summers participating in intercultural programs in Europe. Carrie graduated with a B.A. in International Relations and Latin American Studies from Claremont McKenna College. While in college, Carrie spent a year studying abroad in Argentina, which gave her the opportunity to explore much of South America. Upon graduation, Carrie moved to Barcelona, Spain where she taught English for three years. Carrie also directed an intercultural program in Quito, Ecuador. Carrie holds a Master’s in International Education from the School for International Training in Vermont. She is fluent in Spanish, French, Dutch and Catalan and she has, lived, studied, and/or worked in the Netherlands, Spain, Ireland, England, Ecuador, France, Costa Rica, Mexico, Zambia and Argentina.
